Websites, webshops & apps for Syria · Smart Design

Your website, webshop or app
for your business in Syria

A fast, Arabic-first website, webshop or Android app for your business in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Latakia or anywhere else in Syria: made for mobile, with payment options that actually work in Syria, and easy to find on Google.

Smart Design is a web agency in Haarlem, the Netherlands, with an Arabic-speaking team. We work for business owners in Syria and for Syrians in Europe and the Gulf who run or start a business in Syria. The whole project runs in Arabic, through video calls, with one fixed point of contact.

The Syrian market

What a website in Syria needs

Syrian customers are mostly on their phones, talk through WhatsApp and want to know how they can pay before they order. A site that is not built for that loses them in the first few seconds.

Arabic first, right to left

Not a translated European template, but a design set up in Arabic from the start, with proper Arabic fonts. English or another language can sit alongside it.

Made for mobile

Most of your visitors arrive on an Android phone. We design buttons, menus and forms for a small screen first.

Light and fast

Connections in Syria are not stable everywhere. So we keep pages light: compressed images, few scripts and caching, so the site loads on a weak connection too.

Payment options that work

Cash on delivery, bank transfer or a local e-wallet such as Syriatel Cash or Sham Cash: we build the checkout around what your customers really use.

On the map and on Google

Customers search for “a restaurant in Damascus” or “a phone shop in Aleppo” in Arabic. We take care of Arabic keywords, your address on Google Maps and a site Google can read well.

WhatsApp and social media

A lot of selling in Syria starts on Facebook or Instagram and is closed through WhatsApp. Your site connects to that with WhatsApp buttons, shareable product links and a product feed.

What is changing

Doing business online in Syria today

Since 2025, digital doors have been opening for Syrian businesses step by step. The United States revoked its broad sanctions on Syria effective 1 July 2025, and international tech companies have since started making their services available again. Google Play has worked without a VPN since January 2026; other services are following in phases. Banks are also being reconnected to international payment networks.

At the same time, not everything is sorted overnight. Some services remain limited and rules can change. We handle that in a practical way: for every project we check which services actually work in Syria at that moment, and we build your site so you can easily add a new payment method or integration later.

What we check for every project:

  • Which payment methods are available at that moment
  • Whether a service (such as maps, an app store or an ad platform) works in Syria
  • Where the site loads fastest for visitors in Syria
  • Whether a .sy domain, a .com or both fits best
  • That you remain the owner of the domain, site and data

We do not give political or legal advice; we make sure your site is technically ready for what is possible now, and for what comes next.

Syria online, 2025–2026

  • July 2025 — US revokes broad sanctions
  • August 2025 — first international Mastercard payment in Damascus
  • December 2025 — Visa announces partnership with Syrian banks
  • January 2026 — Google Play reachable without a VPN
  • Over 9 million internet users (DataReportal, end of 2025)
Checkout

Checkout the way Syrians actually pay

For a webshop in Syria, the checkout is the biggest question. International payment services such as PayPal and Stripe are not yet available to businesses operating only from Syria, and online card payments are only slowly getting started through Syrian banks. So we build the checkout around methods your customers already know today.

Cash on delivery remains the basis for many shops. You can also offer bank transfer and mobile wallets such as Syriatel Cash and Sham Cash. Where a wallet cannot yet be connected automatically, the checkout shows clear instructions or a QR code, and you mark the payment as received in your admin panel. If you live in Europe and sell to customers outside Syria, your business there can simply offer iDEAL, cards and Apple Pay through Mollie or Stripe.

  • Cash on delivery, with confirmation by WhatsApp or SMS
  • Bank transfer with an automatic order-number reference
  • Syriatel Cash and Sham Cash via instructions or QR code
  • Payment status per order in your admin panel
  • Ready to add card payments later once possible

Hosting

Fast loading, also in Syria

We host your site on reliable servers outside Syria and add a CDN where needed, so visitors in Damascus, Aleppo or Latakia and Syrians abroad open the site quickly. Pages are kept light for mobile connections.

  • SSL certificate and secure connection
  • Daily backups
  • Images automatically resized
  • Load-speed monitoring
Domain

A .sy domain, a .com, or both

A .sy address shows that you operate in Syria. Registration runs through the Syrian registry NANS and takes more paperwork than a .com, so we go through the requirements with you first. A .com is quicker to arrange and can sit alongside it.

  • Domain always in your name
  • Business email on your own domain
  • .sy and .com pointing to the same site
  • DNS and SSL set up by us
Apps

Apps that fit the phones Syrians use

In Syria the large majority uses an Android phone, often a mid-range or older device with limited storage. An app for a restaurant, shop, delivery service or clinic therefore has to be small, start quickly and keep working when the connection briefly drops.

We build the app for Android first, with the same Arabic look as your website and connected to the same admin panel. Now that Google Play is reachable again, the app can be published there; an iPhone version can follow later for customers in the Gulf or Europe. Push notifications keep customers updated about their order or appointment.

  • Android first, iOS when needed
  • Small install size, fast start-up
  • Works with unstable connections
  • Push notifications in Arabic
  • One admin panel for site and app

Getting found

Google, Maps and social media together

A Facebook page on its own is fragile: your reach depends on the algorithm and your customers cannot see prices or stock. Your own site alongside social media gives you a permanent place that Google knows.

Found on Google and Maps

  • Arabic keywords per city, such as Damascus, Aleppo or Homs
  • Business profile and location on Google Maps, where available
  • Opening hours, phone and directions in one tap
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages that Google values
  • Structured data so Google understands your business

Selling via WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram

  • Order button that opens a WhatsApp message with the product
  • Product links that look good when shared
  • Product feed for your Facebook and Instagram shop
  • Permanent product pages instead of scattered posts
  • Orders from every channel in one place

Whether a particular Google or Meta service already works fully in your region is something we check at the start of the project.

Working together

A team in the Netherlands, talking in Arabic

Whether you have a shop in Damascus, are opening a clinic in Hama or are setting up a business in Syria from Germany, the Netherlands or the Gulf: you work with the same team. We talk in Arabic through video calls and WhatsApp, the time difference with Syria is only one to two hours, and you follow progress on a test environment you can open on your phone at any time.

Many Syrians in Europe want to help family or a partner in Syria run their own business. You can both join the meetings, and the person running the business day to day gets an explanation of the admin panel in Arabic. Payment arrangements for the project are agreed per project.

  • All meetings in Arabic, Dutch or English also possible
  • Video calls at times that suit Syria
  • Test environment to follow progress
  • Admin panel walkthrough and guide in Arabic
  • Three-month warranty after delivery

One project, two countries

  • Owner in Europe — approves design and schedule
  • Manager in Syria — handles orders and products
  • Smart Design — builds, hosts and maintains
  • Meetings by video and WhatsApp, in Arabic
  • Everything visible on the test environment
How we work

You approve an Arabic design, we build the site or app, set up payments, WhatsApp and Google, and let you test everything.

03

FAQ

Questions about a website for Syria

Yes. We are based in Haarlem and work online for business owners across Syria, from Damascus and Aleppo to Homs, Latakia, Hama and Tartus, and for Syrians abroad with a business in Syria.

Yes. Arabic is a native language within our team. Meetings, copy, the site itself and the admin panel walkthrough can all be in Arabic.

Usually cash on delivery, bank transfer and local wallets such as Syriatel Cash or Sham Cash. PayPal and Stripe are not yet available to businesses in Syria; we check what is possible at the start of the project.

Yes, but registration runs through the Syrian registry and requires documents. We explain what is needed. A .com can be set up right away and works well for customers abroad too.

That is what we design for: light pages, resized images, caching and a CDN where needed. We test the site on an ordinary Android phone and a slow connection.

A standard website is usually live within 10 to 20 working days. A webshop or app needs more time; you receive a schedule up front.

Payment arrangements are agreed per project. After the first call you receive a quote with a fixed price, and we discuss together how payment will work.
